Does anyone know what movie this is?

I recently saw a movie on tv, and it was very weird. There was this main character, a man, who had a mustache and always carried a revolver. He had red pants, and was in a sort of dream-world. He was in this big floating stone-looking head, and shot a man at the head's mouth, causing the latter to fall to his death. Later, he becomes trapped in a society that seems to be led by women who are strongly opposed to ual activity. Flashbacks of the man's endeavors are shown, including a lot of plundering and killing. Very strange movie, incredible visual detail.....everything is unreal. At one point, there are plants inside of plastic bubbles....Many references were made to 'the vortex' as well. I believe it's rather old (maybe...70's?)...anyone know what movie this is???
