How are these films "film noir"?
Film noir means dark film in french. Dark in mood and tone, usually with a down beat ending, and definitely filmed in black and white. No way Roger Rabbit is film noir, it's a cartoon. Fight Club is borderline noir, it does feature narration throughout which is another component of noir. But it's in color and I think is more offbeat than having impending doom. Double Indemnity features all the criteria of noir, black and white, downbeat ending, desperate characters. And in my opinion is the inspiration for Colombo, the Edward G. Robinson character is exactly like him.
