Did composers write the words for their choral symphonies?

okay, so in a previous question i ascertained that composers often did not write the words to their operas, many just wrote the music. But for choral pieces such as Beethoven's 9th, Mendelssohn's 2nd and many Mather symphonies, who wrote the words for them? id have umed that the composers did, but then that's what i thought for the operas. So did Beethoven write the words for his 9th, or just the music?
